Actually, it may improve performance on newer cards too. I think it's still worth looking into. :)

Maybe you're right. Actually, I thought about it last night and I remembered that my driver uses vertex arrays "behind the scene" when using VBO whatever the access mode (STATIC_DRAW or any other mode), I think that is why I don't get any boost with the current implementation.
